Job Description

An exciting career opportunity has arisen for a skilled Gardener to work in the gardens of a historic property at Inchydoney in West Cork, Ireland.

The property is situated in a secluded location benefitting from the gulf stream and is a couple of minutes walk to the beautiful Inchydoney beach.

It is also within walking distance of the award winning town of Clonakilty; a friendly, welcoming town with a great community spirit and plenty to do including a vibrant music scene.

Inchydoney House:

The property consists of 33 acres of natural landscape, formal and informal planting. Thanks to the mild coastal climate, an incredibly large variety of plants are being grown including some unusual and rare specimens. Its most important feature is a recently restored 2 acre walled garden with its dry stone terracing, glasshouses, cold frames, potting sheds and ponds.

The layout includes a flower/vegetable/fruit production garden, Italian garden, rose garden, exotic borders and informal wildlife pond. Other features of the property include lawns, mixed borders, several ponds, a saltwater lagoon, woodlands, courtyard garden, wild flower meadows and beehives.

The role:

  • Reporting to the Head Gardener, you will assist in all the duties required for the care, maintenance and development of the gardens
  • This includes propagation, vegetable and flower production and greenhouse management
  • You would be expected to deputise for the Head Gardener in his absence
  • You would be expected to work over time
  • You should have developed sufficient skills in organisation, planning and people management to be in a position to take on the Head Gardener role full time should the opportunity arise.

Essential:

  • You should have a minimum RHS Level 2 or similar qualification, with sound horticultural and plant knowledge
  • A commitment to wildlife-friendly and sustainable garden practices is essential  
  • You must possess good interpersonal and communication skills
  • You must be able to show attention to detail
  • You must be able to manage your time efficiently 
  • Must have a working knowledge of health and safety standards
  • You must be physically fit, hard-working and have a desire to achieve high standards at all time.
  • A full clean driving licence is essential
