Job Description

Leopardstown racecourse is a leading international racecourse and entertainment venue, offering world-class horse racing and a great day out. Located only six miles south of Dublin city centre, at the foot of the Dublin mountains, Leopardstown racecourse provides the fun and excitement of horse racing in a quality environment.

The track is situated in a 220-acre estate and is a left-handed oval track of one mile and six furlongs with an uphill finishing straight, an 18 hole golf course, a driving range and various other businesses. Racing is the core business at Leopardstown hosting 23 racedays, including feature race meetings the Christmas Festival, Dublin Racing Festival and Irish Champion Stakes.

This role is responsible for maintaining and developing the public areas within the Leopardstown site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain, develop, and enhance the appearance and health to a high standard on a day-to-day basis, of the following areas:
    • Pre-Parade and Parade Ring.
    • All green areas (including trees/shrubs) in entire estate (excluding racetrack and golf greens).
    • Boundaries (internal and external/natural or man-made).
    • Car parks (surfaces, barriers/gates, signage and lighting).
    • Roadways and foot paths (surface, signage, line markings, leaf removal).
    • Decorative flowers/shrubs in pots/beds – indoor and outdoor.
    • Waste management on all the above areas.
  • Overseeing horticultural duties such as planting, pruning and maintenance of trees, soil cultivation, bed preparation, weeding, general plant care, seed sowing and planting on.
  • Research new equipment and techniques to improve working practices and visual experience for customers.
  • Prepare beds, propagating, planting out, tending, and caring for flowering plants and shrubs, digging, pruning, weeding, fertilising, and watering.
  • Maintain hedges, planting, and pruning small trees, keeping paths and roadways clear from weeds, removing tree stumps.
  • Liaise with tenants as necessary to ensure no area of responsibility is overlooked.
  • Liaise with any third-party service providers in relation to site management issues.
  • In the lead up to race day (or non-race day events) ensure the presentation of each area of responsibility is executed based on event brief & manage and supervise relevant areas before, during and after event.
  • Operation and Maintenance of Machinery and Tools

  • Be familiar, and trained if required, with the safe and effective operation of all motorized and non-motorized equipment to carry out duties.
  • Maintain all items of equipment on a regular and scheduled basis.
  • Health & Safety

  • Participate in all Health and Safety training provided.
  • Ensure all tasks carried out by yourself and anyone under your supervision are completed in line with company procedures and Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Maintain all necessary records for machinery, tools and chemicals.
  • Ensure records can be accessed at any time by a supervisor or Health and Safety official.
  • Report any concerns to relevant personnel.
  • Actively engage in the Leopardstown Raceday Event Plans and Emergency Plan.
  • Assistance and supervision for all 3rd party contractors.
  • Future Planning

  • Develop a creative vision for the relevant public areas and be able to bring this vision to fruition.
  • Be creative and innovative in the use of plants, trees and shrubs across the site, having regard for optimising aesthetics and suitability of plants.
  • Project Management   

  • Carry out projects or capital expenditure projects as instructed by supervisor.
  • Assess and document project needs, design project outlines to include timelines, costs, constraints, risks, requirements and recommendations.
  • Manage projects to ensure they are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Integrate the horticulture function into the development of the Leopardstown Brand.

    Administration

  • Responsibility for annual horticulture budget (planning, spending and administration).
  • Project planning (understanding brief from supervisor or presentation of proposed project to supervisor). Designing specifications, getting fair and timely quotes, submission of paperwork to procurement through PO system, raising of PO’s,)
  • Supplier management – getting best value for the organization, setting up SLA’s as necessary, ensuring the supplier understands the agreed terms before any work is carried out.
  • Raising PO’s in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Submission of timesheets for employees under your supervision in a timely manner (as directed by HRI payroll department).
  • Attend weekly operations meetings and other meetings as requested.
  • Leadership      

  • Lead the team under your care, ensuring their continual development.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to staff reporting into you.
  • Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum QQI Level 6 Horticultural qualification and at least 3 years practical horticultural experience.
  • Relevant experience in horticulture and knowledge of plants.
  • Vision and creativity with the ability to bring projects to completion.
  • Experience of leading a team.
  • Competent DIY and machine operating skills. (Chainsaw licence desirable).
  • Relevant pesticide qualification PA1 & PA6 (desirable).
  • Full Irish driver licence (essential).
  • Passionate about horticulture and sustainability.
  • Be flexible in working hours in line with racing calendar.
  • Proficient in the use of technology, i.e. Microsoft packages.
